Epic medieval villages in Empordà

ACTIVITIES  /  Burricleta, the Catalan e-bike

Activity description:

Visit the Castle that genius Dalí gave his wife Gala and discover great medieval villages.

This tour starts and ends at the Flaçà train station, where the instructors deliver the e-bikes. You have plenty of connections from Barcelona and Girona train stations.

You leave the station and you cycle towards Sant Joan de Mollet. You continue and go through the tiny, tiny villages of La Vilosa and Pedrinyà. Don’t forget to visit the charming chapel of Sant Andreu.
You follow the path till we reach La Pera (The Pear), the largest town along the route. Don’t bother looking for fruit! All the Catalan names with the word «Pera» refer to stones! Once you have been round the village, you will move on to Púbol, which is frequently visited by tourists because the Catalan artist Salvador Dalí chose its castle to be the residence of his beloved Gala. Don’t forget to check it out, Dalí is always surprising!

You continue and cross the gorgeous Cassà de Pelràs, which leads us towards the woods, where you will find the villages of Planils and Anells, so tiny and hidden away that you can miss them in a blink of the eye. Cycling along calmly you’ll come across the popular medieval village of Monells. Spend a little time there; its history and views are really worth it!

After a break we will start to climb alongside the river and while you absorb the Mediterranean forest scents we will discover Millars, where there is a magnificent stately home. Finally we will happily climb up and down and up again as this is what the Burricleta does best, to reach Madremanya. Cross it slowly to discover all its ancient corners.

You are already on the last stretch of route towards Sant Martí Vell, a charming medieval village of cobbled streets. From there, you return back to the station where you can take the return train.
